Nottawasaga OPP and Huronia West OPP are working to remind everybody to “expect the unexpected” on the water.
It’s National Drowning Prevention Week and people are being told to stay tuned to the OPP’s social media accounts for videos and updates.
They say anybody heading out on the waterways should always wear a person flotation device.
Sgt. Dave Moffatt, Provincial Marine Coordinator, says “a life jacket stored somewhere on a boat will not help you if you somehow fall into the water or get knocked out of your boat.”
Moffatt says “safety is paramount when it comes to recreational activities on the water.”
So far this year, 11 people have died on OPP-patrolled waterways.
Over the last 13 years, that number jumps up to 300 with 256 of those (88 per cent) not wearing a PFD.
