Conservation officials are working to restore a healthy habitat in Monora Park.
Credit Valley Conservation has begun lowering water levels in the pond, to prepare for the eventual removal of the pond and dam – which has reached the end of its life.
Senior Coordinator, Wetland Restoration at CVC Paul Biscaia say the ageing dam is a safety and liability risk, so it is time for it be decommissioned and restore the coldwater habitat along Monora Creek.
Residents are encouraged to stay on designated trails and use caution walking next to the pond as the exposed sediment may be deep and present a hazard.
Dog-walkers are also reminded to keep their dogs on a leash.
CVC is hosting an open house on June 16, 2022 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Monora Park Pavilion in Mono where residents can learn about the project.
Monora Creek was dammed in 1965 to create a pond suitable for recreation including swimming and fishing, but over time, as the pond has filled with silt.
