WE Charity is shutting down its operations in Canada.
It announced yesterday that the charity will be selling off its assets, eliminating staff and winding down operations in Canada, in order to keep its international humanitarian programs afloat.
The decision was made months after it became embroiled in a political scandal that has triggered investigations by the federal ethics watchdog.
In a statement yesterday, the charity said the fallout has made fundraising difficult and the “financial math for the charity’s future is clear. Without decisive action, WE Charity’s ongoing costs to operate in Canada would exceed revenue and consume savings that are essential to establish the endowment fund. We calculate that this action preserves as many humanitarian and educational programs as possible, for as long as possible. Putting children first means prioritizing them above the charity.”
WE Charity co-founders and brothers Craig and Marc Kielburger also announced that they plan to leave the organization once the process of closing Canadian operations is complete.
The organization was first created in 1995 as a way for youth in Canada to help less-fortunate kids around the world.
