The Town of Orangeville is working on reopening more recreational programs and facilities – but it is a challenge.
Town officials say they continue to evaluate how to restart the town’s recreation programs and open things like swimming pools and ice rinks.
The business model for recreation centre aquatics programs is based on large participant volumes, and the traditional way to deliver those is not possible right now.
Although the province recently announced that municipal pools could reopen, the number of participants is regulated by Public Health.
They are considering shorter summer programs, held a couple of days a week at some of the smaller facilities — with a focus on outdoor activities.
As for hockey, ice pads can be used for skill development – but not games – with a maximum of 10 people on the ice, and they’re not able to meet the restrictions on spacing in areas like dressing rooms.
