Both federal and provincial governments are investing in emergency assistance for beef and hog farmers in Ontario.
The funding will cover the increased costs of feeding market ready cattle and hogs due to COVID-19 processing delays.
It will also help to redirect surplus pork products to those in need, and ensure the country’s food supply remains strong.
The program will provide 5 million dollars each in funding to beef cattle and hog sector producers.
Farmers can claim $2 per head of cattle per day to help pay for additional maintenance costs should they have to keep their market ready animals on their farms for extended periods.
The hog sector program will assist the pork processing industry with managing capacity while helping those in need, providing $1.5 million to process and package pork for food banks.
