Milk quality standards and testing protocols are being amended.
Several milk-industry regulations have been amended by the Ontario Farm Products Marketing Commission.
Milk quality standards and testing protocols, that are enforced on behalf of the government by Dairy Farmers of Ontario, are being amended to merge with counterparts in several provinces including Quebec.
Those amendments include changing the method for calculating when bacterial content, and instituting a warning rather than a penalty, for the first freezing-point problem in a 12 month period.
At the request of the Dairy Farmers of Ontario, animal Care and Welfare regulations have been adopted, so that the care and handling can be checked as part of the on-farm inspection program.
The Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan is buying a Prince Edward Island-based mussel business.
The pension plan announced Friday it has bought Atlantic Aqua Farms, the largest grower of live mussels in North America, from a San Francisco-based company.
Headquartered in Orwell Cove, the company sells P.E.I. blue mussels under the brand names of Canadian Cove, Confederation Cove and J.P.'s Shellfish.
It also offers branded oysters, clams, and live Maine and Canadian lobster.
The purchase of Atlantic Aqua Farms marks Ontario Teachers' first venture into the realm of aquaculture.
