CETA Coming Into Effect

By Fadi Didi

Major portions of the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, or CETA, are coming into effect this week.

The Chair of the National Farmers Union Seed and Trade committee, Terry Boehm says it is the wrong trade deal for Canadian and European residents.

However, Boehm says it is very good for major corporations that have any sort of relationship to either Canada or Europe.

Indeed, he adds it is a bill of rights for corporations, allowing them to override governments all the way down to the municipal level.

Boehm says CETA is the first trade agreement that penetrates beyond national levels to include provincial and municipal levels of government in its purview.

He claims the Trade agreement is all about limiting the ability of governments to govern in the public interest.

Seed distributor Quarry Seed is looking at getting into the corn business.

The Manitoba-based company, which mainly deals in soybeans, is planning to launch a couple of corn varieties next year.

Western Canada district manager Todd Walker says moisture and heat are challenges with growing corn.

He added that they'll be looking for varieties which mature early and produce good yields.

Quarry Seed is also planning to offer honeycomb oil sunflowers next year.
