The 51st annual Grey Bruce Farmers week kicks off Wednesday.

Coordinator Lori Smith at GreyBruce ag services says roughly 13 hundred people will come through the doors over the next 7 days.

It's all happening at the Elmwood community centre.

Events kick off on Wednesday with Beef Day.

Seminars will be held involving several speakers including Matt Bowman the President of the Beef Farmers of Ontario.

Dr. David Lamb, a Beef Technical Consultant will also speak at the opening day of Grey Bruce Farmers week in Elmwood.

The Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Processors Association is warning of a ``perfect storm'' as it tries to push for a new agreement with growers.

Executive director Don Epp says in a news release that the growers cartel is operating in the 20th century by demanding exclusive monopoly pricing for its products.

Epp says the Ontario Processing Vegetable Growers is clinging to an outdated system and preventing individual growers from negotiating aNd marketing their products directly.

He says the industry also faces threats from the Trump administration to tear up NAFTA.

Health Canada has proposed new food labeling amendments designed to make it easier for shoppers to compare serving sizes on different products.

Canadians will also be able to tell how much sugar is in a product because the sugar-based ingredients will be grouped together.

A new health claim will also be allowed on fruits and vegetables, informing Canadians about the health benefits of these foods.

The changes come after two years of consultations with consumers and stakeholders.
