2014 was a big year for Brian and Anita DeJong of DeJong Acres in Georgian Bluffs.

They won the Ontario Sheep Pasture award this year.

It recognizes the family's environmental and pasture improvements and management at their operation, which includes about 600 ewes plus their offspring.

Part of the plan is to move fences frequently and keep ewes in small paddocks.

The DeJongs credit their current pasture management with being one of the key factors in the financial viability of their sheep operation.

Our federal government is giving 1.6 million dollars to the Canadian Livestock Genetics Association.

The Conservatives say the money will help open new export markets for Canada's dairy, sheep and goat sectors.

Part of the money will be spent to differentiate Canadian genetics from that of competitors in some 45 markets around the world.

Officials say the goal is to increase the sale and export of dairy genetics by 10 per cent by 2015.
