The Fresh Produce Alliance wants the federal government to establish a payment protection system similar to the U-S system.

The Alliance says Canada lost preferred access to the U-S Perishable Agricultural Commodities Act on October 1st.

That gave Canadian fruit and vegetable growers access to the same rules U-S growers could use to recover unpaid bills.

The Alliance says the move has put growers at risk.

The fresh produce sector supports almost 148 thousand jobs in Canada and contributes 11.4 billion dollars in real G-D-P.
