Grey Bruce Farmers Award handed out.

By Kevin Bernard

A recent grad from the Ontario Veterinary College receives 1 thousand dollar award.

The annual 1 thousand dollar prize has been awarded at Grey Bruce Farmers week.

It recognizes new veterinarians entering food animal practices serving producers in Grey and Bruce counties.

At the recent convocation ceremony at the Ontario Veterinary college at Guelph, the award was present to Dr. Kim Painter.

Painter graduated in the spring and started working at the Mildmay Veterinary Professional corporation.

She married Dwyane Koeslag who operates a dairy farm near Clifford.

The spokeswoman for the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef says its job is to work on producing beef in an economically, socially and environmentally responsible manner.

Fawn Jackson says its job will be to take the principles and criteria being developed by the global roundtable and see how they apply here in Canada.

The roundtable's membership comes from diverse groups and organizations, including the Canadian Cattlemen's Association, McDonald's Canada and the World Wildlife Federation.

Jackson says the Canadian group is responding to growing consumer interest in knowing where their food comes from, how it's produced and concerns about natural resources
