Award Winning Producers

By Manny Paiva

Some local producers did well at the Ontario Spring Discovery Show.

Length: 1:03

The Ontario Spring Discovery Show was held last week with a strong showing from Ontario and Quebec producers.

Of note -- a Holstein calf from Hanover won her class.

Watdale Sid Melinda, owned by Dale Watke, took the red ribbon.

Glen and Sheila Burgess of Mildmay placed 3rd in the Junior Yearling class.

Ed, Bonnie and Christopher Franken of Teeswater placed second in the senior two year olds.

And Glen and Curtis O'Neil were third in the 4 year old class.

The Canadian Bison Association is glad to see strong beef prices.

Executive Director Terry Kremeniuk says it helps Bison prices -- and they have stabilized since hitting rock bottom in 2003 after the BSE crisis.

Up to 45 per cent of Canadian bison production is consumed domestically.

And Agriculture Canada plans to hire trained dogs again this spring to protect its central experimental farm from hungry Canada geese.

The Ottawa farm is used to develop new crops, but geese are notorious for gobbling up seeds and ruining the experiments.
