Maple Leaf Foods reports 14.4 million dollar loss in fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter was not a good one for Maple Leaf Foods.
The food company is reporting a 14.4 million dollar net loss.
President and C-E-O Michael McCain says their efforts to streamline operations incurred tremendous costs -- noting they opened new meat plants before older ones could be closed.
By the end of this year, Maple Leaf says it will operate 13 meat plants instead of 22 -- and two distribution centres instead of 19.
A Flesherton family has been honoured by Ontario Holstein.
Brian and Crystal Betts were presented with the Master Breeder Shield at last week's annual general meeting in London.
It recognizes their efforts for superior production and type of their herd.
Gary Cain of Paris was also elected as the new President of the Ontario Holstein Branch.
Participants also raised more than 12 thousand dollars in an auction for the Ontario Youth Dairy Trust.
And Federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz says shipping grain south may not be a good option for clearing the backlog of grain sitting in bins across the Prairies.
Ritz is blaming the railways for the problem -- characterizing them as a service industry that doesn't care about service.
