The Bruce County Plowing Match begins today

Length:

It's a big weekend in our region for many farmers -- there are several different plowing matches taking place.

The Bruce County Plowing Match begins today at the Culclough farm just north of Teeswater.

John Gillespie of the Bruce County Plowmen's Association says the competition is a tune up for the International Plowing Match.

The Keppel Sarawak Plowing Match also takes place on Saturday at the Emery Farm near Cobble Beach.

The North Grey Plowing Match will occur on Monday at the Stewart Farm just outside of Owen Sound.

Carrie Davenport of the North Grey Plowmen will take part in the Canadian Plowing Championship set for October in Brandon, Manitoba.

A Canadian agronomist argues the North American Free Trade Agreement could devastate our ability to produce food.

Wendy Holm says that's because the deal costs us our sovereign rights over resources like water.

She notes farmers in Alberta compete with foreign oil extraction companies for the province's limited water resources.

---------

A big deadline for Ontario farmers today.

August 31st is the deadline for filing 2012 Farm Business Registration.
