FCC Hosts Public Meeting

Annual meeting to announce results and strategic direction of the business

Dozens of farmers from across Midwestern Ontario are expected to attend tomorrow's annual public meeting of Farm Credit Canada.

President and CEO Greg Stewart will be one of three speakers at the meeting.

He will report on the FCC's quarterly and annual results and the strategic direction of the financial business.

Stewart notes agriculture and the agri-food system contributes 130 billion dollars to Canada's economy each year and one in eight jobs.

The meeting is being held at the Alma Community Centre.

Registration begins at 4:30 tomorrow afternoon and it will be followed by presentations and a reception.

The U-S government has announced an extensive package to help drought stricken American farmers.

The Agriculture Department plans to buy up to 170 million-dollars' of pork, lamb, chicken and catfish.

Agriculture Secretary Tim Vilsack says the move will help producers struggling with the high cost of feed.

He says the food will be used in nutrition programs and sent to food banks.

Farmers will also be offered low-interest emergency loans and more federal land will be available for grazing.
