Relief for Apple Growers

Apple Growers hope to hear soon about support for farmers for damaged crops.

The Chair of the Ontario Apple Growers Association hopes to hear soon about support for farmers whose crops were damaged by frost.

Brian Gilroy is optimistic something will happen -- since politicians will leave soon for their summer break.

Federal Ag Minister Gerry Ritz has said the government is prepared to help farmers and Gilroy believes it will be through a disaster relief program.

Only 65 per cent of apple farmers have crop insurance -- and Gilroy says that will help -- but he adds it will be nowhere near the kind of losses sustained by apple farmers.

Some growers lost their entire crop.

Bruce Grey Owen Sound MPP Bill Walker will tour different orchards in the Meaford and Thornbury area tomorrow morning to examine the frost damage.

A warning for Canola growers.

Ontario Agriculture says flea beetles are now very active and present in emerged canola.

Flea beetle damage leads to reduced and weaker stands -- and shows up as shot holes or pitting in leaves and stem feeding.
