Fruit Prices Rise

Prices of fruits and fruit products are on the rise.

Prices of fruits and fruit products are on the rise.

Several food companies are raising prices due to the soaring costs of wheat, corn, sugar and vegetable oil.

They have gone up as much as 50 to 100 per cent over the last year.

Juice and fruit snack company Sun Rype Products says the prices of its juice concentrates are expected to hover at near record levels this year.

Federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz is meeting with Russian political leaders this week.

Ritz is trying to expand the livestock trade so more Canadian breeding cattle is shipped overseas.

Russia is also interested in Canadian hogs.

Fertilizer prices are rising at a slower pace than skyrocketing crop prices.

Wayne Brownlee -- the chief financial officer with Potash Corporation -- says the trend will be good for farmers.

Agrium also plans to increase its potash production by one million tonnes by 2014 to meet growing demand.

And the fate of the Canadian Wheat Board is causing friction between the Manitoba and federal governments.

Manitoba flatly opposes Ottawa's plan to dismantle the agency's marketing monopoly.
