Essa Mayor Vying for federal Conservative Nomination

Regional | by Mariane McLeod
Terry Dowdall says he has the experience for the job

Essa's mayor is looking to move onto the national stage, challenging Kellie Leitch for the Conservative party nomination in Simcoe-Grey.

Terry Dowdall says he considered trying for the nomination in 2011, but instead wanted to focus on his duties as Deputy Mayor. He says his 17 years in municipal and county politics will serve him well as Conservative candidate.

New rules in the Conservative party mean even a sitting MP can face a nomination vote. Dr. Gillian Yeates of Collingwood is also challenging for the nomination.

There's no word yet on when or where the vote will take place, but anyone who wants to be part of it, will have to be a member of the Conservative party before January 25th.
